Gyros

1 pound ground beef or lamb
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 small onion, chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
4 (6-inch diameter) pita breads
2 cups shredded lettuce
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 tablespoon snipped fresh mint leaves
or 1 teaspoon dried mint leaves
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 small cucumber, seeded and chopped
1 medium tomato, chopped
Mix beef or lamb, water, lemon juice, salt, cumin, oregano, pepper, garlic and onion. Shape into 4 thin patties. Cook patties in oil over medium heat, turning frequently, until done, about 10 to 12 minutes.
Split each pita bread halfway around edge with a sharp knife. Separate to form pocket. Place patty in each pocket; top with lettuce.
Mix yogurt, snipped mint and sugar; stir in cucumber. Spoon onto lettuce; top with tomato.
